2009 is the 50th anniversary of Island Records – arguably the most prestigious record label in the history of British music. Until its founder, Chris Blackwell, sold the label to PolyGram in 1989, it was the biggest independent label in history, having left an indeliable mark on the industry though a back catlogue of iconic records.
